We own a Amish built barn style house with a non vented gambrel roof. The house was built in 2016. The roof consists of the metal roofing ,layer of felt ,1/2” OSB with approximately 2-3” of cc spray foam on the osb. We just discovered that the OSB is rotting where the upper roof meets the knee wall. When the house was built they never installed flashing between these sections of the roof. We are going to get the roof repaired and want to prevent this problem from reoccurring. Without being certain which caused the rot lack of flashing or the method of insulation, what would be recommended to prevent this?

Water was getting in through the metal and then trapped in the decking by the closed cell foam. When the roof is deconstructed, it should be pretty apparent what the root cause was.
