Is there a reason why a roofer would do this? I've never seen the end of roof panels with rivets in them before. The roofer did not do this to all of the panels just about 40% of them

If you close over the seam end, they can be real prone to getting re-opened by ice and snow if you're in an ice and snow area. The rivet appears to be an attempt to prevent that.

Thanks Todd, the odd thing is that rivet is the only thing attaching that flap to the panels. We are in Atlanta so snow is not much of an issue here.

Oh, so the "flap" is an entirely separate piece of metal -- not the other side of the seam folded over. Well, that's one way to do things I guess.
