I just had a detached garage built, with a standing seam metal roof. When it gets hot and the sun hits the roof the metal will loudly "pop" and you can visibly see the roof dent in several of the valleys. When the sun goes behind the clouds or it cools down, the roof will "pop" again and smooth out. Is this normal?
I don't have any insulation on the inside of the garage.

Some popping will occur with expansion and contraction and it can lessen over time. So much depends upon the exact type of metal roof you have. Now, that said, can there be installation-related factors that influence this? Yes, but it likely would require a site inspection to determine those. I am not sure what you mean by "valleys". I am happy to look at photos if you wish to email them to [email protected]

Hi Todd, thank you for the quick response. It is much appreciated. Attaching a couple of pics. If you zoom in a bit you can see the dents that form during the heat of the day when the sun hits the roof. There’s usually a “popping” sound when they come and go.

Hi Todd, just checking to see if you got those roof pics.

Shane, I am not sure what happened but I don't think the images posted. Can you possibly just email them to me? [email protected] Sorry about the inconvenience.

Thanks, just emailed them.

I have a metal roof. During the day and night I hear a popping noise and also a sound like the trusses are moving. I had a solar fan installed because someone said it might be heat expansion. That has not helped. Any other ideas?
Thanks in advance

Is the roof installed on solid decking or on purlins attached to the trusses?

I believe it is just plywood, paper and the metal roof. I don’t know what purlines are?

Very good. As far as truss movement, I do not see how that would be roof related. As far as noise from the roof during temperature changes and thermal movement, yes, that can happen and I doubt the fans would help. Do you know whether the roof panels were designed with any allowance for thermal movement?

I don’t know. This was all installed 20 years ago. I’m thinking of getting the screws replaced. The other noise I have no idea. I’ve lived here for 20 years. This just started about a year ago.

Thank you. If there are exposed screws, then the metal panels do not have allowance for thermal movement. I am baffled as to why the noise would just start now. An exposed fastener roof is probably due to have the screws changed after 20 years.
