Installed a metal roof HOA says utilitarian metal roofs are not allowed. This characterization seems antiquated. Any resources or studies showing the growing popularity and aesthetic desire for these type of roofs?

Ultimately, of course, they can usually do what they want. There is a website at www.roofingforhomeownersassociations.com that may be helpful. Have you contacted your metal roofing manufacturer to see if they can give you some support on this?
