I am having my 20 year old metal roof re-screwed and the contractor is using 1.5 inch # 10 screws which appear to be the same as the screws being extracted (photo attached). It was my understanding that he should go up a screw size to ensure that the screws have a good grip. He indicated that this is a V5 roof and they utilize the same screw size but with a broader core so they do not impact the integrity of the hole in the metal roof.
Does this make sense?

BY VS I assume you mean vertical seam. It is normal to go back with larger diameter screws, and generally that is recommended. I'd suggest consulting with either the roof panel manufacturer or the fastener manufacturer on this question.
