We lived in the Virgin Islands for 7 years. Hurricanes are commonplace. Every single house has a metal roof. There are no shingle roofs. We now live in Florida and watched out the window while our roof shingles dropped from the sky when hurricane Charlie went over us and ripped the roof off, a few shingles at a time. We have now replaced our roof with a metal roof. There is no doubt in our minds that metal is stupendously better when it comes to hurricanes. We will never have anything else.
