Raising The Roof on Architectural Style With Creative Design - Case Study

The Project
Why is it that roofs are sometimes an architectural afterthought? The fact is the right style of roof can complement and even greatly enhance the beautiful design of a home. Such was the case for a home in Long Island, New York, where a striking new metal roof has become a focal point, boosting both the curb appeal and the performance of this stately residence.

The Challenge
This home’s intricate roofline boasts a variety of geometric shapes that beg to be highlighted. With this concept in mind, the owner decided to offset the home’s beige, brown and white earth tones by selecting a rich boysenberry-colored metal roof designed to mimic the look of Spanish clay tiles.

But the design creativity didn’t stop there. The homeowner ended up selecting two different, yet highly complementary systems from ATAS, International: the manufacturer’s PC System and Techo Tile system. By doing so, the unique architectural details of the roof stand out beautifully, thanks to the use of metal that offers the appearance of traditional tile, along with tapered, standing seam panels that help spotlight the balcony areas in the center and on both ends of the house.

The metal roof also offers a variety of performance benefits, including better airflow between the panel and substrate which increases energy efficiency. Long-lasting, strong yet lightweight aluminum also doesn’t weigh nearly as much as tile, providing great protection without the need for additional structural reinforcements.

Michael Galfano of Riverhead Building Supply, the company where the material was purchased, said, “The homeowner is thrilled with the way the roof came out. This was a challenging project, but we were all very pleased with the results.”

Spotlight on MRA member ATAS:
This project features ATAS Techo Tile .032 aluminum panels installed vertically up the slope of the roof. For the balconies, tapered PC System panels in .032 aluminum were chosen in the same Boysenberry color as the Techo Tile panels. ATAS PC System is a two-part system offering a standing seam or a batten seam look and is manufactured in .032 or .040 aluminum, 24 or 22-gauge metallic coated steel, and 16 oz. copper.
