Darby,
Thanks for the question!
There are several benefits to metal roof that makes them more and more common.
First, metal roofs last a long time. Other roofing materials may have to be replaced multiple times before a metal would.
Metal roofs are cost effective, especially when considering the durability.
Metal roofs are strong - they are able to resist loads (wind, snow...).
Other benefits include coatings that reflect heat rather than absorbing it, recycled content, recyclable and low maintenance.
One last note is that these befits are available with properly designed and indstalled metal roofs.

To add to David's list I would note the following.
Metal roofs are also lighter than their counterparts and therefore can handle more load purely from the reduction in static load.
Metal roofs do not have any harmful run off potential and do not pollute the ground water.
Metal roof are far less likely to accumulate mold/mildew than their wood, asphalt, and composite counterparts.

Standing Seam Roofs are the ultimate in metal roofs, characterized by a “U” shaped panel that can be up to 40 feet long. Its technical superiority and beauty comes from the fact that usually the length of the panel is not punctured with screws or nails. These panels are made to be secured with a concealed clip inside the standing seam, which means the fasteners are hidden from view. There are imitation standing seam roofs available, which incorporate a nailing strip as part of the panel. However, a true standing seam roof using concealed clips allows for expansion and contraction of the long steel panels as they can slide within the clip. Allowing such expansion reduces the potential of oil canning in long panels. A big part of the look is also that the outer edges are hemmed over the drip edge and gable flashing to create clean, waterproof lines and a roofing system that is resistant to wind uplift. Most are made of 26g or 24g & sometimes 22g painted steel, but custom made copper and aluminum standing seam panels are also available for specific applications like over bay windows or on vertical walls on storefronts. Various profiles of standing seams are available like Vertical Seam, Batten Seam, Mini-Batten Seam, etc. The most classic is the Vertical Seam. Standing Seam roofing, while being medium cost (about twice the cost of standard low grade asphalt shingles), is the longest lasting, most trouble free and least maintenance of any sloped roofing system available. Standing seam roofs are a specialty at Roofmaster and Rooftek, where the staff and owners have been installing various versions for over 3 decades.

One of the biggest benefits of the metal roof is that it comes with a 30 year manufacturers warranty (Australian Manufacturers)...
They also have better protection, and we all know the weather can be unpredictable, and with the extreme Australian conditions like torrential rain, hail storms, gusty winds and bush-fires affecting homes right across the country, more and more homeowners are seeking the protection of a metal roof.
In my opinion Metal Roofs have many more benefits than the concrete tile roofs...

One of the most obvious benefits to the metal roof is the 30 year (manufacturers warranty) that you can get...

Metal roofs are more modern looking and have many advantages to the concrete roof tiles.

What are the "attachments" I see on standing seam roofs. Some are quite ornate, some not so. Generally they are staggered, and the ones
I've seen are attached to the top of the seam and their bottoms are an inch away from the roof. At one time I thought these were rain diverters, but now?
Thank you.
