I am trying to decide whether to install metal roofing in the New Orleans, Louisiana area. This assessment includes the need for significant wind resistance. As I understand it, a metal roof with long panels 24 or 36" wide would be installed with clips so the panels can slide to accomodate the significant expansion and contraction. Most metal roof panels have undergone uplift or wind testing. While tropical storms and hurricanes are always unpredictable (and, keep in mind, much damage that does occur is actually due to blowing debris), many metal roofs have passed very severe wind and uplift tests. Look for products which have passed uplift tests such as UL 580 or UL 1897 and also for products which have passed actual wind tunnel tests up to 110 mph or more. Additionally, you might look for products which have Dade County product control acceptance.
