Hi, I'm a Tampa, FL resident. So, given the hurricane season we're having, the questions follow: Are metal roofs more durable against hurricane-force winds than asphalt shingle roofs? Further, will a metal roof stay on a house in 140 mph + winds? Metal roofs are much more wind resistant and in fact surpace the resistance of most roof systems. The one way to tell is to ask if they have completed a UL 580 wind test wich is where a 10' x 10' roof section is constructed and subjected to cyclinal upward and downward pressures. This simulates a severe wind storm. At the conclusion of this test the test decks are then tested to UL 1897 which then vaccumes the roof until it fails. This failure load is rated in PSF, pounds per square foot. I can tell you that our systems averaged 125 PSF over 3 test decks and with wind load calculated at 31 PSF/ 100 MPH you can see that it is pretty impressive. If you are concerned about any roof systems performance ask to see their test. Well I live in Charlotte County directly hit by Charley. From roofs I have seen here I can tell you from new metal roofs and old metal roofs they truely did perform better than traditional roofs, but their were some metal roofs bent, curled, missing, and some with no damage except for dents from impact. We had an upward of 150mph winds here to put everything in perspective. I am not sure if the pitch of the roofs had any play in their damage from the wind or impact from debris.
