I am considering a standing seam metal roof, I am concerned about whether or not it can withstand hurricane force winds, wind driven rain and sand and potential corrosion.

Simple. Ask to see the product approval on the product you selected or ask to see their UL Listing on wind , either will indicate that it has been tested and what the resitsnce rating measured in PSF is on the system. Then check the building codes to see what is required and with what safety factor.
