I have seen varying specifications on this. Some manufacturers see in the flat, others in the top of the V, others say either is fine. Check with the manufacturer of the product you're installing and do what they say.

I recently replaced my barrel tile roof in Punta Gorda, FL, with white vertical metal roofing. I am VERY disappointed to learn the screws are exposed and not covered.
When will the screws show rust?
Can this roof be painted sucessfully when this happens?

Itdepends on the quality of screw that was used. Ask your contractor for info on this and then contact the manufacturer of the roof system to get their opinion. If there is a concern on quality, I would have them replaced with a stainless screw. Atlas Bolt and Fastener makes a screw with a warranty called the Ultimate which has a stainless head and a great capped washer system.

I can offer that I placed my screws in the flats, as recommended by the manufacturer, and I had leaks. I replaced the roof, and demanded that the screws be placed in the peaks, and no roof leaks have developed. My slope is 5/12.
