Sep/Oct 2005 contractor installed Acrylume R-panel, mill finish, roof to house. Before final inspection in Nov, it already had rust on many of the panels. Inspector pointed it out to us and said it was due to installers not washing metal shavings off roof. Now there is rust on every panel, ranging from speckles to pencil eraser size. Is this unusual or typical? Contractor has inspected and acknowledged the problem but now will not return our calls. We realize that the metal will eventually patina and age, but how long should the Acrylume finish keep rust at bay? Thanks for your insight.

Can you send me some pictures of the problem please? I would also like to see the cut ends of the panels.
I would not scrub too hard but using Soft Scrub cleanser may clean off the shavings and the rust.

I have a similar condition to that presented by Kathleen.
Ferrous filings from pilot holes drilled for rivets were not properly cleaned from the deck and have now corroded. The deck is about one year old and there is concern that the rust speckles will eventually cause damage to the kynar coating and lead to metal deck corrosion.
The speckles are numerous but small and the metal filings may now be gone or completely corroded. The speckled appearance is not of concern due to the height of the roof but we need to know if the rust speckles have, or will, compromise the integrity of the roof panels.
