I really want to put a black metal roof (20 inch standing seam) on our prairie style home and I've been told by my contractor that it's not a good idea. He said there will be too much expansion and contraction; it will be too hot, it will fade and warp. But he says dark brown or dark bronze will be fine. Our climate is hot and dry in the summer with snow and below freezing temperatures in the winter (not sure if that even matters). Are any of the concerns of my contractor valid? Personally, I'm skeptical because I've seen many pictures of homes with black metal roofs. Any thoughts? Thanks!

I do not think his concerns are valid provided you have a high quality paint finish. Also, do realize that black metal roofing is very black -- far different in appearance than, say a black standard shingle which really is more of a dark gray.

Thanks Todd for the advice. We have decided to go with Firestone's matte black, which is not as intense as the true black, which like you said is very black. Definitely, a nicer look for the amount of roof we're going to have. Thanks again.

One more question, Todd. Is there a standard width between the seams? In my earlier post I had mentioned 20 inches - I like a wider seam. I think it looks sleeker. Is this as wide as I should go? or too wide? Are there any potential problems the wider you go? Thanks again.

Wider panels can be more prone to showing oilcanning. Also, to me, the width of the panel depends a lot on the size of the building. Small buildings seem overwhelmed, in my opinion, by wider panels.

Thanks Todd. Is 20 inches too wide then? Would you say the industry norm for residential buildings is more like 16 or 18 inches?

20" is not unusual but this comes down to aesthetics. I personally like the scale of 12 - 16" panels on most homes.

Todd, I am goingwith an atlas blackstone slate shingle, I have 2 cones on my house and really want to break up the pattern, plus I hear that I shouldn't shingle them and it is better for the cones to be metal. I looked into copper, but way too expensive, looking for an alternative but would really like to keep my colors consistent, will have black roof, gutters, windows Brownish tan brick and buff stone, do you recommend a black steel or bronze or anything else? Once again it is for the cones and should be all solid and smooth. [email protected]
