I live in a pretty small town with only three different roofing compnys. None of them carry metal roofing. I want to know if it's going to cost me more to get an out-of-town contractor to install a metal roof if I go in that direction than if I just went ahead and got a regular roof from a contractor around here. Thank you.

No. Just like if you were going to have your bathroom or kitchen remodeled, you could get bids from three different companies in three different towns, and if you picked the one that was furthest away because they had the best bid, they wouldn't charge you for mileage or anything like that. But I would suggest that you use the MRAs Request a Contractor form on this site. Fill it out and we'll find you a metal roofing contractor in your area.

In regards to what Owen said, there are more roofers than you'd think that install and offer metal roofing across the US and Canada. This site, rather than cold-calling roofers out of the phone book, is the best way to shop around, find what's right for your home, and get a good contractor to install it.

Dear Sir / Madam,
I am considering to re-roof my 2400 sq. ft. house located in Calgary, Alberta, Canada. Residential metal roofs are not popular in this part of the country. Contractor who advertise residential metal roofs in Calgary yellow pages could not give me a few addresses of houses with metal roofs.
Despite of this, being a mechanical enginer, I do believe that residential metal roofs have great potential in the city of Calgary, which experience extreme weather conditions due to the proximity to the Rocky Mountains.
However, I would like to know more about your product.
Here are some questions:
1. Please provide a reference to US and Canadian Standard Organizations which approved your product.
2. Is your product acepted by CSA, UL, ANSI, etc. ?
3. Can I get technical specification of your product ? Especially; metallurgy of the plates, their thicknes, description of metal coating,description of plastic coatings including their thickness and number of layers, etc.
4. Please explain technically your claim that "metal roofs are not atracting lightnigs"?
5. Please explain why do you (or not) recommend connection of metal roof to the lightning rod?
6. What kind of material do you recommend as metal roof underlayer? What is the thickeness of this material<
7. What is the weight range for residential metal roof pounds per sq. foot (including underlay)?
8. Do you consider to install a show case residential metal roof in one of Calgary's up-scale districts?
Your prompt response would be appreciated.

We are owners of a 115 year old farmhouse with the original terne roof still in place...it is in fairly bad shape and we are trying to locate contractors who will put on a new terne roof, or steel, but the OLD way. We don't like the caps and flat valleys we've seen around here, and would like to find a contractor who will do the job as correctly as possible and as historically faithfully as possible. Are we nuts? Are there artisans who will do the double fold ridge, etc. still around? Will they travel to East Tn? Thanks Linda Sinko

These type of contractors do exist however they are typically do not advertise as they rely on word of mouth and they are usually busy. As such there is a certain premium to pay when you chose to have a roof installed in this manner.
Believe it or not, this type of application is not that difficult and is still taught in some of the trade schools at least in BC and Quebec in Canada. Typically you are looking for a company that would be listed in a yellow pages as "Bert and Sons Roofing and Sheet Metal, Established 1925".
I would suggest calling any local architects and or historical societies along with asking at your local building supply store. Typically someone knows of a contractor once you start asking.
Failing that start contacting any of the MRA Member Manufacturers. I know a few of our contractors that are cabable of this howevr none are in Tn. Good Luck.

My lanai is 13ft. wide and 30ft. long. I would like to roof it. It is presently screened and I would like some type of material that would allow the maximum amount of of light to filter into the adjoining rooms. Can you suggest the best materials for this purpose and a local contractor to do the job?

Well Jack a metal roof is a great choice for a low slope, it will block the sunlight. You do need to watch that once you roof over a roof designed for screen, it may not be strong enough to hold it down in the wind.
Having said that if you do choose metal pick a nice white colour that will reflect the maximum amount of sun and keep you nice and cool.
A number of the metal roofing manufacturers offer clear acrylic sheets that can be infilled to provide sunlight. I would contact one of our member manufacturers and visit their web site.

Because A-frame roofs are primarily all roof [less vertical side walls] is the cost prohibative? The cottage in question is located in the north Michigan woods. Particulars relating to the structure: 33 years old, original asphalt shingles, sets approx.,225' from inland lake, islands of moss under asphalt shingles.two dormers 16' wide
with near flat roof on north and south of cottage. Several years after we occupied the cottage, we found carpenter ants enjoying the cedar ceiling. When I found saw dust waste on the floor on entering, I treated with DDT [legal at that time]. But, when the little rascals would drop 19 ' from the ceiling onto my reading material, I called a licensed exterminator. He treats the cottage and premises every spring before we occupy it. In the approx,. 20 years that he has treated, we have seen only an occasional ant and no waste products. We use the cottage early spring and fall and all summer. There is a furnace and fire place. Answer the above question, please and also a warranty and feesability

Many owners of A Frames are choosing metal roofing. With an A Frame, you need to look at the roofing as both roofing and siding. Replacing the roofing is not much different than if you replace both roofing and siding on a more conventional house design.
On an A frame, it makes sense to find roofing which is distinctive and durable and offers other benefits such as energy efficiency. You can use the Find A Contractor feature on this website. However, you can also use the website to find products you like and then contact the manufacturers and inquire with them as to the suitability of their products for an A Frame.
With some products, metal roof installation might occur over your existing roof. This helps to add energy efficiency and it also can save you some money and mess.
Metal roofs typically have warranties covering paint finish as well as the base metal and manufacturing defects. Once you find products you like, get a copy of the warranty to review.
As to the ant situation, I would certainly suggest reviewing exactly what is going on there both with your exterminator and your roofing contractor befeore proceeding with the installation.
