I had a standing seam metal roof installed on my new home and it is extremely noisy when the sun hits it. The panel length is almost 30' and it is fasened directly to the roof sheathing using pan head screws every 18" directly through the metal (no clips, holes or slots were used). It sounds like someone is throwing rocks at my house. I am also concerned that the therman expansion forces on the screws will cause them to eventually work loose from the OSB. The contractor has told me that there is nothing to worry about and that once the house is insulated the sound will go away. What should I do?

Jason, Please check with the manufacturer of the roofing to make sure that your roof was installed properly.

It was propperly installed it is a metal sales Image II panel. Was it the wrong application for that long of panel?

I am under the understanding from Metal Sales' website that Image II has pre-punched elongated holes for fastening down the hidden fastening flange. As long as fasteners are centered in these holes and not over-driven, the panels should be properly fastened. It would not be impossible though to perhaps hear some popping on occasion during times of rapid expansion or contraction. Again, I would strongly suggest contacting Metal Sales to get their opinion. No one knows their panels, including their limitations and what performance testing they have undergone, better than they do. I would not think that they would make 30' long panels if they did not expect them to perform.

The roof did not have prepunched holes. I asked an engineer with metal sales how the panel acomodates expansion, and he could not answer my question. I think they messed up and are not willing to fess up.

Jason, their website indicates the panel should have fastening slots / groove. I would suggest that you ask Metal Sales to have someone come out and look at the installation if at all possible.
