I currently have a galvanzed shingle roof with skip sheathing. I like the sound of the rain on the roof. Is there anyway to KEEP the sound with the modern shingles, or do they all require so many layers under them that the soothing patter will be lost?

This is refreshing to hear as most people worry about metal roofing being too noisy. If you choose a system that install over the existing or requires plywood etc underneath yyou will loose the sound. I would remove the existing material, choose a sytem that installs without solid sheathing and does not lay tight to the decking.

I live right smack in the middle of the country in Kansas City, MO with tornadoes, wonderful thunderstorms, snow and ice. I want the same 'rain pinging on a metal roof' sound that I miss SO much from childhood as well. We currently have asphalt shingles and want to replace with metal. Will not having a solid sheathing underneath be a problem with our weather here?
