We live in central Florida, the heat is intense in the summer. My current roof seems to draw the heat into the attic and therefore the house making my air conditioner work extra hard. Will a metal roof offer more protection against the heat?

There are several issues involved which help to make a metal roof a "cool" roof.

Ventilation is also beneficial and metal lends itself well to good ventilation through the attic. Additionally, some metal products, by their very formation, have airspaces between the metal and the roof deck. In some cases, that gap can even be ventilated as well.
Also, while light colors are most reflective, there are also now metal roofs available which utilize new reflective pigments for high reflectivity even in darker colors.

Generally, most steel products are acceptable for Class A.
However, I cannot stress enough -- check with the manufacturer of the product you're planning to use and get this information from them.

Look for a roof with a lighter color or reflective pigment coating. Also, look at increasing ventilation in the attic AND also keep in mind that some metal roofs can be ventilated above the roof deck as well. That is also very effective at decreasing attic heat gain.
