Our church recently installed a new metal roof. Lightning rods were originally installed on the old asphalt shingles. The church is higher than the trees/other buildings in the area. Do lightning rods need to be put back or do we need to "ground"?

There are very few instances of metal roofs being struck by lightning. It has also been well established that metal roofing does not increase the risk of a strike.
However, high buildings are at risk.
First of all, I would make sure there are no metal plumbing pipes through the roof. All such things should be PVC.
Next, I would contact a lightning control specialist and then work with the manufacturer of the roofing to determine an appropriate method of protecting the structure since it is the highest object around.
