Hi - We just had a steel roof installed. the contactor said the roof doesn't need to be grounded. Is this correct? Our house is a prime target for lightning the way it's situated.

The probability of a lightning strike has nothing to do with the type of roofing but us related to the topography. In simple terms if your home is high and sits isolated on a small plateau then your probability is high.
The other aspect to look at is what does happen if lightning does strike. Typically it is in conjuction with rain which makes products wet and conducting electricity. If lightning hits a roofing product that absorbs water such as wood shingles, concete tile and to a certain degree asphalt shingle, the lightning strike instantly boils the moisture creating expansion that will destroy the area. Metal on the other hand does not absorb moisture and if struck will disperse the charge. From my experience, we have seen the dispersal of energy follow the water and the downspouts and on the rare occasion loosen them, but this would happen with all products.
