As the "self proclaimed" experts, I don't feel that any of you have "real" knowledge with spray foam insulation. I think the MRA should be doing studies for the best most effcient insulation process to use in conjunction with steel roofs. If the MRA is truly concerned about energy, it's hard to believe there are not case studies that have been performed. The CUSTOMER needs to know what the BEST METHOD of insulating their metal roofs is going to be. ANY COMMENTS OR SUGGESTIONS??

......and the answer is??? I need an answer as well on some basic guidelines. I have a "flat" actually low-pitched 1950 mid century roof that is about to be blessed with a new metal roof. The old metal roof was poorly installed with rotten cornice everywhere to prove it, and then a storm came, trees fell and longstoryshort, we're replacing the old metal roof with new metal roof. Anyhow, since the decking underneath is rotten from water damage in most places, I plan on, gutting the roof in large sections, blowing foam insulation into the 16 inch attic space between decking and interior ceiling below (gypsum). My 2 questions are: 1) closed cell or open cell foam since my foam installer who offers both said open cell might be better in the event of water seepage control ....and 2) since we can't blow insulation from inside, when we lift the old roof in sections and blow the foam from the outside on top of the gypsum to achieve the proper R-vallue thickness, do we have the metal roofers (or framers) there to immediately start decking literally on the heels of the foam sprayers so the exposed roof is covered up and protected, ready for metal roof install next day?

....or should I give up on my dreams of using foam and stuff R-30 insulation in b/w the joists as we re-deck. This house is very drafty and very noisy from highway and falling acorns that sound like 'incoming!' everytime an acorn hits the metal roof and would greatly benefit from spray foam for tight seal and noise pollution.

Closed cell will provide greater R Value and it will also provide greater protection against condensation problems. Yes, I would re-install the roof asap.

Todd, do you know if I can apply closed cell directly to my metal roof? There is no decking other than 1x4 strips.

Yes. 2 lb foam can be applied directly.
