I bought a home with a new metal roof 2 years ago. we just had a solar tube installed and as the solar tube was being installed I noticed that the installers installed the metal roofing panels right on top of the foil without installing required purlins to create an air gap. will this save enery installed this way? and should I worry about the metal roofing materials making contact with the aluminum foil? electrolisis, rust etc... No. Radiant barrier should have an air space between it and the roof surface. The cathodic reaction question depends on the manufacturers indications on the materials. Radiant barriers only work if when they are installed over space in this application. Installing the radiant barrier in direct contact with the roof only serves the purpose of protecting the roof from radiant heat from the inside of the home. Obviously not its intended purpose here. Radiant is designed to control energy radiated over space, not a conductive barrier. Not sure why it was put down like that but lack of fundamental knowledge on the product or general apathy would be my two guesses.
