i am about to have standing seam metal roofing applied to an office building roof of eighty squares in several sections. there are currently two layers of asphalt shingles on the roof.the first contractor wants to horizontally strap over the existing roof. he intends to use 30 inch spacing on the strapping. this is a formed on site hidden screw system using clips to hold each panel down and the next panel locks on and covers the clips.is this an accepted standard method and is the spacing of the strapping adequate. obviously it is much less expensive than stripping the roof. another contractor wants to use 40 lb. felt and aluminum standing seam material without strapping. i would appreciate your opinion. thanks, stephen

Both are acceptable methods of installing metal roofs. The strapping method will provide an overdeck venting feature and will transfer less heat into the roof deck as compared to the direct to deck application.

since this is a trussed building with the insulation at the bottom of the truss and a "cold" roof i imagine that any added coldness is not much of an issue on the strapping method. and thanks for the reply

Both are perfectly fine for that application. The direct to deck application is just fine and if there is adequate ventilation for the attic, you will not notice any temperature differential.
