Gutters for metal roofs

I have a metal roof and was told that there are special gutters for metal roofs. I was told that any gutter I use would have to be placed high so that it would catch the rain. However, the standard gutters would be ripped off when the snow slides off the roof. To date, I have not been able to find any gutter company that will provide a warrantee for their gutters installed on a building with a metal roof. Many claim that they must be installed properly; but they have no "special" directions for metal roofs. It seems that they could always claim that they were not installed properly. From what I found so far, the best I could come up with is to use a leaf guard that is strong and lays over the entire gutter to allow the snow/ice to slide over the top of the gutter without catching the edge of the gutter and ripping it off. What can you provide with regards to gutters that are warranteed on buildings with metal roofs? Thank you.

I have worked with metal roofing for over 20 years. I can only think of a time or two when gutters on a metal roof had snow damage and those were instances when severe weather wreaked all kinds of havoc for all types of roofs and gutters. I personally suggest a gutter system with brackets which attach to the fascia. If possible, attach them through the fascia and into the rafter tails. I also suggest a 6" (rather than 5") gutter mounted as high as possible. I have never seen any "gutter guy" who will warrant that there is no chance of snow damage to his gutters, regardless of the roofing material.
