Hi, New here to the forum...so much to read here, very informative. I need a new roof to replace my asphalt shingles. I would like to invest in a metal roof, leaning more toward standing seam, but considering a "master rib" type as well. I will like go with a Galvalume product with Kynar 500. 1. For either style, when trim, etc. is cut on-site during the installation, is there a need paint the newly exposed edge to seal it? 2. Is it best to remove the asphalt shingles for installation? 3. What is the absolute best underlayment to go with for both styles? Thanks in advance for any help. David

1. Not totally necessary but is nice to do so. 2. Not necessary but I prefer that options so you can inspect the roof deck and address anything that is required. 3. Ultimately something that is synthetic and non-reactive with the metal. Check with the manufacturer for their recommendations.

In regards to my first question, I have read that corrosion on the cut edge is quite common and while it might not permeate the whole sheet of Galvalume, that it can still be unsightly. It seems that is you spend that much money on the roof, that it would make sense to protect your investment. I take it that it is not standard practice then?

That is true. Most manufacturers have readily available touch paint kits/sprays. You can avoid the exposed cut edge in many cases when you arrange the cuts to be covered.
