I am thinking of installing a metal roof over shingles. Is that O.K.? Most of the roof is a 4/12 pitch but 1 section is about a 2/12 pitch. Is that enough pitch for a metal roof? I now have 4 vents in the roof plus vents in the 2 end gable walls. My neighbor that will be helping me install says that he would do away with the vents in the roof and it would vent enough without them. What do you think?

If you have soffit (eave overhang) vents then I would do away with the gable vents. Your soffit vents are intake and roof vents are exhaust. You may want to consider a continuous ridge vent in place of the roof vents for exhaust. As far as pitch ... there are metal roofs that can be used at 2:12 pitch. You will want to be sure that you select one of those, and make sure it is installed according to manufacturer specification. Many metal roofs have a 3:12 minimum required pitch.
