There is no mention of draws in the contract we have for the roof being installed. The contractor asked us for a $10K draw for labor the same day the materials were delivered to the house. I feel very uncomfortable being asked for money that was not agreed upon in the contract. He already asked us for $5K to secure the price of the materials at the time of order due to an upcoming price increase in metal. That wasn't on the contract either, but we gave him the $5K at the time we signed the contract. Is this usual practice? How would you handle this? They have all the panels up and will be starting on the ridge caps tomorrow.

I understand your lack of comfort in doing something not specified in your contract. You may wish to check with your attorney but it would not be unusual to have progress draws.

You stated that you gave the contractor $5,000 to secure the price of the materials. If that paid for the materials and he wants a labor draw before putting on any roof, then I would have a problem.
