My wife and I bought a place in north carolina recently that has a nice metal roof.
The home inspector said "fasteners", of some kind, tend to work their way out here and there. He suggested we go up and tighten them down.
The owner left us a screw shooter, ostensibly for this purpose.
Can we easily tell which fasteners are loose?
Is fixing them as easy as screwing them back in again?
This is our first metal roof.
Is there any way of putting something on them which will keep them from getting loose?

When screws back out, you can often see the washer up above the panel surface. Other times the screw looks snug to the roof but you can turn it a revolution or two before it fully seats back to the roof panel.
I'm not sure what a "screw shooter" is but you can use a nut driver to tighten the screws. If I found any that were very loose, I would take them out, apply a small amount of urethane caulk into the hole and reinstall the screw.

Be careful to not over-torque the fasteners and dimple the roof.
+1 on Ken's recommendation. An ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure and the urethane sealant will keep the screw from backing out as easily.
