Dimples in the metal from nails

I have recently had a metal roof installed using 5V-Crimp Metal painted stone gray. After installation I noticed several dimples in the metal up to about 1/4 inch high. The installer said it was due to the simplex nails that were used to hold the 30# paper down and shouldn't be problem. It looks bad to me. Do you think these dimples can cause a failure in the future and should the metal be replaced? Thanks Steve

I suspect that your contractor is correct. First off is to identify the manufacturer and contact them with the details and get their opinion. Any flat metal directly laid ona substrate will tend to telegraph through any iregularities. The flatter and thinner the steel the more it will show. The longer the sheets, the more thermal movement and rubbing on the button heads. provided that it is a G90 Galvanized or AZ50 substrate, it should be fine provided it does not contact the metal heads. One should always ask for the manufacturers name and see if there are any product approvals to make sure that the product is fit for the use you intend. Hope this helps.

The metal is 26 gauge finished with Galvalume. The simplex nails were dislodged when the metal was laid out and the nail itself is causing the dimple. The manufacturer agrees with the contractor but there is a conflict of interest due to the hich quantities of material purchased. Is there a book you can recommend that contains the information I need? Thanks for your help. Steve

I am not familiar with any book which will prove your point. However, if you can show that the nail heads are in contact with the roofing, thye should agree that that is perhaps not the best situation.

HELP!!! I AM HAVING A 5V CRIMP METAL ROOF INSTALLED AS I AM WRITING THIS, ON A 10/12 PITCH ROOF. THE SHEETS HAVE VERY VISIBLE DIMPLING ON THE FLAT PARTS OF THE PANELS AND I HALTED MY ROOFER UNTIL I FOUND OUT WHAT IS CAUSING THIS? IS THIS NORMAL? COULD IT BE THAT THE SCREWS ARE BEING TIGHTENED DOWN TO FAR? WILL THEY GO AWAY ONCE THE ROOF SETTLES? IT IS EXTREMELY NOTICIBLE AND I DON'T KNOW IF IT IS FROM THE NYLON SIMPLEX TYPE NAILS USED ON THE 30LB FELT UNDERLAYMENT OR, THE SCREWS OR THE PRODUCT ITSELF. I CAN SEE THE DIMPLING ON UNINSTALLED SHEETS WHILE STILL LAYING ON THE GROUND, BUT WHEN LIFTED UP THE DIMPLES SEEM TO DISAPPEAR MOSTLY. HELP QUICK!!! D MCNEAL

Because you can see dimples in the sheets prior to installation, I'd say this is either oilcanning inherent to the product itself or it is perhaps a manufacturing or metal defect. Please ask your roofer to contact the manufcaturer and see if they cam come see the products, or perhaps you could send them photos, for their input before proceeding.

I should have also added that this could be due to damage the sheets might have incurred during transportation or storage.
