Hello Experts,
I recently purchased a 40-year old home with a 50 year old shingle roof :) I am considering aluminum as a replacement, however I have only one concern: acorns.
Most of the house is beneath very tall oak trees, and last autumn I grew to appreciate the power of an acorn falling from those heights - my car now sports various dents in the roof and hood from the little devils.
I figure if they can dent a car, they can dent a roof. Has anyone heard of this being a problem? I've been able to find surprisingly little regarding this on the Internet. The roof pitch is 9/12 if that matters.
Thanks in advance,
Mike

Hi MIke,
I can't say that any real "studies" exist concerning this but I can tell you that I have worked with aluminum roofing for over 20 years and have not had any problems similar to what you're talking about.
The roof pitch will help. Most steel and aluminum roofs have passed the UL 2218 Impact Resistance test but that is more of a test for serious damage rather than just indentations. The point is that minor indentations will not affect roof performance.
I have seen where aluminum roofs which had some denting actually had the dents pop back out over time with thermal movements.
One other thing to think about is, if you go with an aluminum roof which has heavy texturing, such as a shake profie, minor indentations may not even be seen.
Also, some of the shake and shingle profile products have optional foam backers which can be used in the panels for superior dent resistance.
I hope this helps.

Hi Todd,
Thanks for the quick reply. I'm glad to hear that dents won't affect performance. Actually I was more worried about aesthetics. I was thinking about a textured shingle-type product, so the foam backers are good to know about.
Thanks a lot,
Mike

I just read an article on metal roofs. I have an adjuster coming next week to check hail damage and want to know my options. Could I get a "ballpark" figure for 100sq.ft. of Aluminum Verticle Panels. I have a modular home with a single layer of asphalt shingles. Thankyou.
