We live by a golf course and homeowners association won't let us put up a barrier net so we figured a metal roof would be the next best thing. Will metal roofing withstand hits from golf balls?

This depends upon the metal roof system you choose. Generally, more heavily formed products and products made from heavier gauge metal will be less likely to show any "dimples" if hit by a golf ball. Also, some of the heavily formed shake products will "mask" any minor dents which might occur.
Some of the formed shake look products also have available foam inserts.
