What is the perfered method of cutting a panel? Length wise I was thinking metal cutting shears, across the ribs, would an abrasive saw be ok? I know the heat generated will discolor the finish, but if the panel is concealed under a trim piece would its corrosion resistance be compromised?

Generally, for steel roofing, I always prefer a shearing action, such as snips, power shears, or a guillotine. That leaves a much more protected and corrosion-resistant edge. Sawing leaves a very rough edge with a great deal of exposed carbon steel. Additionally, when sawing, the hot shards of metal can land on the roofing panel and melt their way into the paint, creating little flecks of metal which will rust.
