I am sorry, but it really does not look good for your group to refuse to discuss price because "it is against our antitrust guidelines to discuss pricing" This does not present your product in a very good light. It makes it appear that you are overcharging on the product and does not want to let it be known! I do not believe this to be the case, but that is the way it appears due to your "rule". I think that you should reconsider your stand on discussing prices. Thank you very much.

I understand your concerns. However, as an association of competing manufacturers, there are rules set by the FTC which we must abide by. Those are the rules set forth in our antitrust guidelines. The FTC's concern, as I understand it, is that any discussion of prices within our group could be construed as price setting by competing manufacturers, which is illegal. Again, I understand your concern but I also am not going to break a federal law. If you contact any of the manufacturers directly (outside of this public trade association forum), they will gladly help you with your price concerns. You can even feel free to email direct to me at [email protected] if you're comfortable with that and I will do my best to answer your questions as direct as I possibly can.

You don't have to be specific about pricing. Giving an idea in relation to other materials, ie slate, asphalt shingle, fiberglass shingle, foam, cement tile, would probably help without risking your federal neck!

You can expect a quality residential metal roof to be two to three times the cost of a quality fiberglass shingle. Some savings can occur if metal allows you to avoid tear-off and disposal of old roofing. The different types of metal roofing cover a wide price range, though, and that can affect things considerably, especially when you get into non-ferrous metals. Metal will be similar in cost to many better clay tile and wood shake roofs, and probably less than most natural or artifical slate roofs. We have stated these sorts of comparisons many times before. I am sorry you missed them. The pricing of roofing pretty much follows the old adage of getting what you pay for. When folks ask us for specific numbers, though, we simply cannot comply for the reasons stated earlier.

These reasons seem very clear. Why can't anyone just call a manufacturer? It's only one extra step.

Thank you. As manufacturers, we are there to help, to answer questions, to provide information, and to try to make sure that our products are used and installed properly. We really aren't there to "sell" when a homeowner calls us as we cannot ultimately effect a sale anyway! The #1 thing that I, as a manufacturer, am concerned about is that the "right" metal roofing product is chosen for each job. It's easy to see that there is huge variety in metal roofing. Each product has its own attribute. Likewise, each roof has its own particular needs. Matching the right product with the right roof is critical.

Isn't it possible to just get a very general cost comparison to use as a base to see if I (we) are wasting our and or the contractors time?
