Our builder is dead set against metal roofing. He says it will cost 4x more than asphalt shingles and requires frequent adjustment since heating and cooling cause whatever attaches the roof to the house to loosen. This is new construction in the Houston Tx area

This is absurd.
Most of the metal roof systems designed for residential use have concealed fasteners and many also, if required by the system, have built-in allowance for expansion and contraction.
Metal is undoubtedly the most long-term proven residential roofing product existing in the USA.

We live out here in Ca. in the 'high desert' area of the Antelope Valley. The wind up here is a common complaint of nearly everyone. An over-the-top wind storm hit & blew off between 100-200 shingles on our 19 yr. old ranch style home which we bought back in '04. We're in the stages of preparing for a roof repair. However, I ran across this web-site regarding metal roofing & it's benefits. I'd like to think we could do this, but it will all depend on the cost. I like the looks of shingles vs. metal, but the benefits outweigh the looks any day. Guess I'll know more in a few weeks. Looking forward to hearing back from the web-site affiliated Companies as to their costs.
