The basic transition detail is a flashing which extends up under the asphalt shingles by several inches and out over the metl by several inches. It needs to be mounted high enough on the asphalt shingle roof that it maintain a good positive slope where it extends over the thickness of the metal roof. This is determined largely by the profile of metal roofing you're installing. Additionally, Some sort of metal or foam closure will need to be used between the metal roof panels and the flashing. This also is determined by the metal roofing profile.
If the metal roofing supplier you're working with cannot provide the parts and instructions to do this, I would seek out a better supplier.

Many metal roofs are designed to go over asphalt shingles. An appropriate underlayment, as specified by the metal roofing manufacturer, should be used between the two.
Generally, the more heavily formed metal products are best suited for this. Contact individual manufacturers for details pertinent to their products.
