Hi, Of all the metal roof options out there which is the most economical for new construction? I would like to purchase a metal roof but at 2-4x the cost of a 50yr shingle roof it is not worth it. It would be nice to list the cost factors. I bet there is a solution out there that I could afford if I knew who/what/where. My local metal roof fabricators seem to be not on top of new advices/approaches such as metal shingles, prefab panels etc. Please help!

One of the nice things about metal roofing is the wide variety of product styles and prices. Generally, in terms of ultimate life expectancy and warranty value, you do get what you pay for -- the more costly products tend to be the ones with better base metals, better coatings, better engineering. But, again, it is nice that our industry provides a variety of options. Now, that said, all metal roofing is on the costly side because of the cost of the base metal. One of the bets things you might do is get in contact with an experienced metal roofing contractor who can take you through the options. Historically, the low end of metal roofing is through-fastened "corrugated" sheet roofing such as 5V Crimp or R Panel. Even these oproducts come iwth various base metal and coating options though. My husband and I are also researching metal roofs for a new house we are building. We both promote energy efficient design (we're both architects) and we know metal is the best way to go in that regard. However, we can't afford it, either! I've looked into one product by Eagle Metals in SC called "Tuff Rib", probably similar to the 5V Crimp in a galvalume finish. It's the cheapest they offer, but I worry about it lasting with the exposed fasteners and, I'm assuming, thin coating. I'd love a copy of that article you mentioned above, but also any ideas of what you would recommend. We're in Greenville, SC- very hot and humid, but we do get ice storms here and occassional light snows. We'd really like a roof that looks like an old tin roof- hence the galvalume finish (also for cost.) Hope that makes sense. Any help is greatly appreciated! Thanks!
