Hi, our names are Ashley and Ally and we were inquiring about the most energy efficient type of metal roofing. Your article on cool roofing was very beneficial to our project on designing an energy efficient home, but it does not state what type of metal is used. Is there a certain type of metal needed to have an energy efficient roof, or does any type of metal work?
Thank you!

There are several ways energy efficiency can be achieved through metal roofing:
1) Color. Light colors are more reflective.
2) Reflective Pigment. Some paints, in dark colors, have reflective pigment.
3) Some products either through the way they are formed or the way they are installed, have minimal contact between the metal and any lumber on the house. This blocks heat transfer by conduction.
4) Some panels can actually have a vented airspace beneath the metal.
5)Low thermal mass. Metal products quickly lose any heat they do absorb. Through highly emissive top surfaces, they lose that heat back to the sky.
