Metal Roofing Alliance members

Hello. I am considering having a standing seam roof installed on my home. I am considering having a big box store do the install that uses Union Corrugating metal panels. Is Union a member of the Metal Roofing Alliance? What can you tell me about their SMP paint for 26 ga.?

Thanks for considering metal. Union corrugating is not a member of the Metal Roofing Alliance. I am sorry but I do not know anything about their SMP in particular. I suspect it is from one of the major paint producers though.

Thanks Todd for replying. I believe I read that it was highly advised to chose a metal manufacturer that was a member. Are their consequences if one does not? Are non-member manufacturer's products inferior? Is being a member some sort of certification? Question. Why do I want to chose a member manufacturer? Thanks.

Union is a good, long standing company. There is no consequence of buying from them. I certainly trust their products. As with any roof or manufacturer, make sure you understand what warranty you will receive. MRA members do agree to produce products of a certain quality but Union already agrees to do that through another organization, the Metal Construction Association. MRA actually uses the same certification criteria.

I've read that Kynar 500 paints are better than SMP paints. Have SMP paints improved over the years that they are almost equal in performance and longevity to Kynar paints? Seems Kynar paints are only available for 24 ga. standing seam and I was considering the 26 ga., which only has the SMP paint. Thanks for your time and input. I'm trying to do all the homework I can on metal and it is a heavy duty decision on roof replacement but in reality, metal is a no brainer over shingles, in my opinion

PVDF coatings, sold under the Kynar 500 and Hylar 5000 brand names, are widely respected as the industry leaders for fade and chalk resistance. If you live in a southern exposure or high altitude area, I would encourage you to consider them. You are, of course, giving up some quality by going to an SMP finish instead in any climate but in high UV climates, the difference will be quite noticeable in a few years. Super Polyesters, the highest grade of SMP finishes, have good performance, even similar to PVDF, for 5 - 7 years but research I have seen shows them dropping off in terms of quality fairly quickly after that, compared to PVDF finishes. I am sure that there are other producers putting PVDF on 26 gauge but, again, Union is a good company and I certainly would not fault you for using them if you have ready access to their products. Hello, I am thinking of installing a galvalume roof using exposed fasteners. How big a problem is roof expansion/contraction weakening fasteners/washers allowing panel separation and leaking over time? I prefer standing seam, hidden fasteners- but expensive.

Plenty of exposed fastener roofs out there doing quite well. Where is the home and how much expansion and contraction do you think you will be dealing with? The reality is that installation is critical with any roof system and a poorly done standing seam (hidden fastener) roof will leak before a well done exposed fastener roof will at the end of the day. Install on anything is critical.

roof pitch, roof geometry and your local climate (snow loads) will determine which product to use. as far as expansion and contraction is concerned, it is a non issue on most residential applications.

Hello, Follow up to open fastener metal roof question. My home is in Florida, heat and other climatic conditions can be extreme. Roof pitch is 5/12 and roof approximately 3400sq. ft.

I see no reason why that product wouldn't work. I asked about expansion and contraction because, in theory, the more movement on the fastener the more the potential for it to work itself out or degrade the washer. Dick is 100% correct here (as usual) that other design aspects of the roof and climate will have more to do with what system is correct. That said, the pitch is certainly well within what is acceptable for type of roof system. The number 1 failure point on an exposed fastener roof is the fastener/washer combo and the overwhelming majority of those are from installation defect.

All MRA contractor members must be sponsored by an MRA manufacturer member. The Gold, Silver, and Bronze levels are based upon the annual dues paid by the contractor; higher dues levels carry greater membership benefits for contractors.
