thinking of switching to metal roof

Bought a house and moved to upstate NY. My house and garage are close to 100 yrs old. We get a lot of rain and moister, and snow. My garage roof is seriously problematic. Moss grows on the garage roof, but is especially bad on the north side of the roof. I try to spray it down at times, and have tried a number of cleaners and solvents. So I was wondering how well does metal roofs hold up to things that grow any where? Also would I have to change out the roof trusses to support a higher load? And how well does metal roofs hold up to snow? would I have to have it sealed every so often? What kind of upkeep annually would I be looking at? sorry so long.

You will find metal roofs are available in many styles and also quality grades. There is a buyers guide on this site which should be helpful. I also have things I can send you if you contact me at [email protected] Metal roofs generally shed snow well though certain weather conditions can allow for a build up of snow. The metal itself will be much lower weight than your current shingles so I do not anticipate a weight concern. Of course, I do not know details of your construction or if it was built to code. Generally speaking a quality metal roof will not require routine maintenance. As far as mildew resistance, quality metal roof coatings are pretty resistant but certain conditions can cause dirt built up and biological growth on anything. The roof could be cleaned with a light power washing if desired, or cleaners and biological agents could be used. I'd suggest selecting your roof and then contacting the manufacturer of it with details of your situation to see what they say.
