Dear Sir, First of all thank you for your attention and time. My name is João Kessler and I am a brazillian student of Business Administration in a university called PUC-Rio. I am having classes about Administration of small enterprises and the teacher is giving us a case-study of a steel roofing manufacturing company. I have two main questions that I would really appreciate if you could help me to get more information about them: a) It seems that many consumers choose aluminium roofs instead of galvanized steel roofs because the second often rusts. I was wondering if companies could develop a stainless steel roof (preventing the creation of rust) and if they can, what are the pros and cons of this choice? I have read that the stainless steel is more cheap than aluminium (although is more heavy). Both wont rust with time, right? So why manufacturers wont choose to produce stainless steel roofs? This question really got me curious. b) What is the average Debt/EBITDA of a steel roofing manufacturing company? The company I am studying has zero debt, therefore, I want to suggest that it to go to a bank. Joao, Thanks for your questions about metal roofing. I agree that stainless steel also offers good corrosion resistance. The difficulties with producing a stainless steel panel are rooted in the nature of the material. Stainless steel tends to be significantly harder than carbon steel and much harder than aluminum. This means that a stainless steel panel will be more damaging to the roll-former, damaging rolls designed to produce carbon steel panels. Burrs along the slit edge will be more likely to cut into the rolls. Also the hardness makes the material spring back more than carbon steel and much more than aluminum. For example, if a roll is intended to create a 30 degree bend, it may bend the material 35 degrees, including a 5 degree overbend to that the material results in the 30 degree bend. My experience is that aluminum springs back less while stainless steel springs back more. The extra spring back results in a profile that is not the same in depth or coverage. Roll-formed tooling can certainly be developed for stainless steel coil. However, most roll formed panels are carbon steel. A typical roll-former can produce aluminum panels, but not stainless steel. A special roll-former that can run stainless steel may not form carbon steel or aluminum panels properly. I do not know the average debt of steel roofing manufacturers. Some might think zero debt is a good thing, allowing the company to keep the money it would otherwise have to pay on the principal and interest. David, Thank you so much for your kind and immediate reply. I have to say that you've supplied all the information I needed to develop my manufacturing strategy for this case-study. I was hoping I could manufacture a stainless steel roof to compete with aluminium roofs, since the first is cheaper and also corrosion resistent as the aluminium) Apparently producing roofs with stainless steel would require new equipments for the company (otherwise the current might get damaged) and this will demand new money. ?? If applying metal roofing over shingles do I need to install lathe strips prior to putting on metal roofing? If I don't install lathe strips will under the metal roofing sweat and cause a moisture and possible corrosion problem? In most cases (given typical construction methods), battens are not necessary. However, they can be used with some metal roofs, and some metal roofs require them. Other metal roofs can't be used with battens. The key is in choosing a product and then installing it per manufacturer instructions. In most cases, increasing attic ventilation can also create a healthier and more energy efficient home. Does a residential installed metal roof cause problems with cellular, etc signal reception? I live in a very rural area and signal strength is not the best nor is it the worse- but really can't accept less than what it is now. Really would hate to install then regret having done so! If you're in a marginal area currently, you may notice that a metal roof is the straw that breaks the camel's back. I am sorry to tell you that. In most cases, though, it makes no difference. We are all regularly in buildings (warehouses, stores, etc) that have metal roofs or metal roof decks, and we use our phones in them all the time. Depends on a bunch of things but Todd is correct. It will block more signal than asphalt but we do use them all the time in places that are made of metal. If you have line of site to the tower, that is what you need to be concerned with as the signals are not beamed down from space. Eli, it depends a great deal upon the environment and what type of finish is on the metal shake shingle. Some areas are much more prone to airborne fungus than others. Additionally, if the roof gets dirty, that dirt can begin to support biological growth over time. +1. In the right conditions, anything will grow fungus. The beauty of metal is that you can wash it pretty simply and it can be maintained with just normal washing. Has the HOA specified a color or manufacturer? I would suspect so and if that is the case, that information should be readily available from the panel/coil manufacturer.
