We are in a quandary about what metal roofing to buy to replace a shake roof in Wyoming. Our homeowner’s association approved Metro stone-coated steel roofing and that was installed on many homes. Then it became apparent that the stone coating was coming off and the color was fading on some of the roofs. Subsequently a few homes replaced their roofs with the Gerard stone-coated steel roofing. That roofing has been on some homes for a couple of years and appears to be maintaining its color and coating. Based on that, we decided to go with the Gerard roofing. However, we were just informed that Boral acquired both the company that manufactured Gerard and the company that produced Metro. Obviously, we would only want to buy the Boral roofing if it is the same as the Gerard product and has not slid in quality. Our local roofing supply company is now recommending the Decra HD stone coated steel roofing. We get high winds in the winter (60-80 mph gusts not uncommon) and snow.
We would appreciate any input and recommendations as to deciding between the stone coated Boral and Decra HD roofing.

I would suggest, if you have qualms about Metro / Boral that you contact them and discuss your concerns. Keep in mind the Boral acquisition and re-structuring is pretty recent so limited track record there as far as anything that a third party could comment on with any authority. ATAS International, an MRA member, also has stone-coated products. Also, there a PVDF-coated steel shakes available. PVDF coatings have a long history as the industry's finest paint systems, and they carry fade and chalk warranties. MRA member companies producing these products include Green American Home, Kassel & Irons, Edco, Certainteed, and Future Roof.

Decra vs. Boralsteel - i think coating wise they are virtually the same, pick the profile you like best and go with that or explore the other options in Todd's post.
All of the stone coated products do fade over time regardless of manufacturer.

Or copy this URL: https://www.metalroofing.com/spirit/comment/23743/find/I just wanted to add that as a veteran of the metal roof trade (28 years) the issues that Metro had with color and coating are similar to the same issues that other metal roof manufactures have had. I have installed 100s Metro stone-coated steel roofs and had coating issues with only ONE. And it was replaced by Metro at no charge to the home owner.

We are leaning toward the Boral product because it feels sturdier. However, the Decra HD shake has an overlapping system for the fastener which the local wholesaler feels is better. I am a little concerned after reading the other comments on leaking roofs. Does the overlapping fastener make enough of a difference in potentially precluding leaks to maybe make a purchaser lean toward the Decra shakes? Since it has been 6 months since I first posted are there any new developments or concerns regarding either of these shakes.
