Hello - I am new to metal roofing, so want to learn as much as I can before requesting quotes from contractors.
Page 13 of the Buyer's Guide mentions that the inclusion of "special paint pigments" in the coating can help make a metal roof "cool".
So - when specifying to a contractor that I would like for the coating to include those "special paint pigments", how would I do so exactly? What terminology would I use? Is there a specific trade name or brand name that I should specify, to insure I'm using the right language?
Thanks in advance.
(BTW - from a newbie's perspective, the Buyer's Guide is EXCELLENT)

Glad to hear the Buyers Guide has been helpful. That's great! So, most products with PVDF coatings will have reflective pigment. PVDF coatings are sold under the trade names Kynar and Hylar. Probably the best way to identify finishes with reflective pigment is to ask whether the colors meet Energy Star standards.

Thank you.
Does that mean, then, that SMP coatings will not have the reflective pigment? (or maybe some do and simply asking the Energy Star will give me the asnwer).

I think that some do and some do not ... so, yes, I'd ask if they meet Energy Star requirements.

One more....
What is criteria for a coating to meet the Energy Star standard?
Thanks for all your help.

Sure! Initial Solar Reflectance of no less than 0.25 and three-year aged solar reflectance of no less than 0.15. These are the numbers for roofs of greater than 2:12 pitch.

Hi again. Yesterday you helped me identify a couple of trade names for PVDF coatings. Thanks for that.
Same question for SMP coatings. What are a few of the trade names for SMP coatings?
Thanks.

So, Kynar and Hylar are resin trade names and those resins are used by multiple paint manufacturers who then probably each have assigned some trade name or moniker to their paint formulation.
It's a little different with polyester as I know of no such trade names for the resin. However, each paint manufacturer will have trade names for their coatings that use the resin.
Some SMP coating trade names are Ceram-A-Star, Ceranamel, and Weather XL.
