Hello,
I am have a home built and had a Standing Seam roof installed. I have some concerns with the installation. I’m being told the appearance is normal, but I haven’t seen it in the roofs I have seen. I contacted the manufacturer and they are saying it appears to be oil canning. I can understand some of this, but it looks excessive to me.

There can be unavoidable inherent stresses or inconsistency in the metal sheet, there can be waviness in the roof deck, the product could be fastened too tightly, and the manufacturing roll former could be out of adjustment. While the industry generally does not look at oil canning as a reason for rejection, beauty is in the eye of the beholder and you can raise the concern. Have they said what they think the reason is for this? Do you see the ripples in the panels before they are fastened to the roof?

It was pretty cold outside when it was installed and warmed up significantly when we came out to see it again. I assumed it had to do with expansion. Fabral the manufacturer said it appeared to be oil canning and really gave no other info. I questioned the builder and he said he would speak with the roofer. Haven’t heard anything. I understand it may not be a problem, but in my opinion is not very nice to look at. There must be steps that can be used to keep this to a minimum. I’m trying to get a professional opinion, because I think I’m going to be in a battle to get this corrected.

I'd press all involved to try to help find some solutions if at all possible. In some cases, backer rod can be installed behind the panels to put a small crown in the flats of the panels and try to "take up" the ripples.

I would also ask how / where they have "pinned" the panels ... it looks like the uphill ends of the panels are tight against the ridge cap and pushing into it, possibly causing additional problems.
