Question from TN:
I am scheduled for my roof being installed next week. I really want to make sure I'm getting everything done the right way. Background on my house--- it's 41 year old ranch style house not sure of age of 1 layer of shingles but I believe to be over 20 years old. Have had a couple of leaks.
My roofing contractor says the roof didnt appear to have any soft spots and that he could put metal directly over existing shingles. I have asked him to put synthetic felt down before the metal. He said he uses 1.5 inch screws. Is this right for going through metal, felt and wood? Should I have him put wood burring strips down? Or should I have him completely tear off old roof and start fresh? Will old shingles deteriorate and cause problems under metal? Or will I be ok with the felt, metal directly over old roof?

I replied to the other one and addresses all of your questions that are in this post except your question about fastener length. 1.5" should be adequate for what you describe ... assuming he is fastening into the flats of the metal panels.
