Hello. We are in the process of building a new home with a full metal, standing seam roof. Our contractor has hired a roofer that does not appear to have experience with metal roofs. It is half way done (we made them pull the roofers off until we figure out what to do) and the roof has oil canning on all edges that are complete, visible dents that can be seen from the street, scratches all over, pencil marks that we cant get off and they made many weird cuts around dormers. Around the dormer windows it looks like the cut or bent the metal on top and then put an extra piece, that is the same width of the roof, basically an extra panel of metal around the sides of the windows. They said this was so water didnt get it but it looks very different then the other roofs I have seen. My question is - is there a certification that is required to install metal roofs? How do I know if these guys know what they are doing? All of the other roofs I have seen have long straight lines and no dents or ripples that are visible from the sidewalk.

There is no industry certification per se ... largely because there are so many product types and designs. Most manufacturers though offer training and also have manuals. I recommend getting the manufacturer involved in helping to sort out what needs to be done, what are proper installation procedures, and who is properly trained / experienced to do the work.
