This weekend I will be installing a metal roof, I'm just trying to lockdown more specific information on what to fasten the 1x4 straps with. My options are either A.) Screw them in with a drill, B.) Rent a nail gun/compressor or C.) Hand hammer the nails. What types of fasteners are necessary and what would a fastener pattern look like?
Right now the plan is to put 1x4s on all the edges, then 2 ft OC from the bottom up, but how close to the ridge do I get?
Any help would be greatly appreciated, from a DIYer looking to save a few thousand dollars.

First of all, please consider the fact that very few metal roofs require "strapping". I generally am not a fan of it in most cases. Also, underlayment should be installed first in all cases, even if the old shingles are left. The strapping, if use, is normally nailed down and you will want to nail into the rafters not just the decking. The spacing of the boards is going to be determined by your metal roofing manufacturer. They should have load tables expressing that.
