Just bought a 150 year old home. Roof has no underlayment. It just has old wood shakes & two layers of asphalt shingles. Is it advisable to put a metal roof on top of this?
The take off is going to be very costly & then the entire roof will need new decking. I really want a metal roof. But, I will not be able to afford it unless it can go on top of what I have.

Building codes generally do not allow more than two layers of roofing. I would not advise doing anything outside of code. That said, the low weight of metal roofing is conducive to going over existing roof. In my experience, heavily textured metal roofs such as metal shingles are most forgiving of going over uneven surfaces.
