we are putting a metal roof on our home it has shingles now. one half the house has cedar shake under the shingles the other half has plywood. the shingles and cedar shake are being removed and they are planning on putting the metal over the plywood on one half and over the existing slats on the other. is it customary to not put decking down over the slats first. if you stand in my attic you are looking at the cedar shake on that portion of the home. we are putting in a class 4 metal roof.. can you explain what that means also. thank you for you time
can metal roof be layed over slats with no decking

Class IV refers to an impact resistance rating that can be achieved under the UL 2218 standard. Class IV is the highest possible rating. I always recommend solid decking beneath metal roofs on residential jobs. Not having solid decking is greatly increasing the risk of condensation in the attic. If you go forward without the decking, make sure that you have good ventilation in the attic.
