A roofer is putting metal roofing on my home. Where the roofing meets the siding does not look right to me. The roofing angles up over the siding about six inches; however, there is no caulking between the siding and the roofing. I don't know where this water goes that hit there, and I am concerned.
Thank you.

The flashing ideally would go behind the siding which would require the siding to be removed. A less desirable option would be a slight saw cut into the siding and then the flashing turned into it and sealed. Another less desirable option is to create a trough between the flashing and the siding by turning the flashing out a bit at the top and filling that trough with sealant.

Thank you for your response. Maybe he did something like that last option. Looking at the opening between the metal and the siding, I do not see any sealant. Could it be inside lower? Looking at the pictures, what do you think he did? And what would you recommend? Is this simply a less desirable option, or a big problem?

I am concerned there may be unsealed gaps between the siding and the flashing, creating an area where water will get through the roof system.

That's my concern too. I'm just trying to figure out a way forward. I believe he tried to go under the siding but had trouble and gave up. I base this on the fact he broke off the white trim and loosened all the siding on one of my dormers long before doing any of this questionable work. I contacted another roofer with a request to inspect his work, but they declined. I have not paid him the balance, and he has other things that need fixed. I am planning on finding another roofer to look at it. I assume attempting to put sealant in as it is would be a very poor method.

Also, with the preferred method, do they really have to remove all the siding all the way up?

To go behind siding like yours, yes, it would probably all need to be removed. There is always a risk of it splitting and needing to be replaced.

The roofer is working to make the corrections. He started putting the metal behind the siding. I am told the small gap at the bottom is normal (see picture). I'd like to confirm that. He did offer to make the gap more flush (see quote below). I don't want to complicate things further if it's not important. What do you think?
Thank you so much for all your help.
"What I can do is run a piece of “Z” metal underneath the sidewall metal to have something to apply rivets to or some sort of fastener. I can get ordered with enough for all sides if need be, and re do That side again, if that is what you will allow me to do."

Hello,
We are curious to know of any updates on your roof installation as we are having ours replaced, and the roofer has installed it much like yours.
Thank you.

It would be nice to have a Z Cleat sealed in place that the sidewall flashing locks onto.

From my research, this gap can be up to 1/4 inch (his is more). This could apparently be fixed without too much trouble; however, there are other issues here. The gap between the siding and the sidewall flashing is supposed to be 1 1/2 inches at the most. It is more than that, perhaps as much as 4 inches in places. He cut the siding way too much simply to get rid of the holes in the siding he had made when he put the flashing on the outside! Not only that, he didn't even cut the siding straight (see picture).
I was told I had to give him a chance to correct his mistakes. I was very reluctant. After waiting over 2 weeks he put in about 8 hours and this is what I got--just additional damage to my house. I fired him again and plan to put a claim against his insurance. This nightmare has been going on since May.
