Im planning on installing a Metal roof on an A frame cabin. Currently the roof is cedar shake. Would I need to rip off the cedar shake and then install the metal roof or can I keep the cedar and install on top. If I rip out the cedar I would probably need some type of insulation because inside the house is just cedar no insulation.

I'd suggest talking to your roofing manufacturer. Some metal shakes could potentially be installed over what you have along with a layer of underlayment. Other products would require vertical battens followed by horizontal battens to help create a smooth surface. That said, the best thing to do may be to remove the roof shakes, install insulation and solid decking and then the new metal roof.

Thanks Todd. I think the plan will be to remove the existing roof shakes, install decking, 2 inch rigid foam insulation another layer of decking, vapor barrier and then metal roof. What do you think?

That sounds good. You could consider a breathable underlayment since there will not be any ventilation. The insulation will be very helpful to prevent condensation but a breathable underlayment would be good as well.
